Media Library

The WordPress Media Library contains all the files you’ve uploaded to your WordPress site, with the most recent uploads listed first.

Using the WordPress Media Library

To visit your WordPress Media Library, expand the Media menu from the WordPress Dashboard. The Media Library page will show all of the media items you currently have in your media library.

Adding New Media

To add a new media item to your library, whether it's photos, videos, audio files, or documents, click the Add New link. From here, upload a new item. Once your item has been uploaded, you’ll see it has been added to the library.

Recommendations

For most websites, make sure your file is no wider than the width of your webpage.

If you are planning on displaying images in full screen mode (such as the wide image shown above), you might want to plan for your full size images to be 1,280px, 1,920px or even wider. Your WordPress theme normally ensures that larger images will be automatically resized downwards to fit them in the monitor resolution of each visitor.

When you upload an image, WordPress not only uploads the original image, it automatically creates three resized images for you:

  • a Large version (default 600px)

  • a Medium version (default 300px)

  • a Thumbnail (default 150px)

You can therefore always choose to use your full size image, or the Medium or Thumbnail.
